In the 2000 Census, 94,634 residents were counted in Brockton, Massachusetts. 9,446 residents described themselves as being of Hispanic or Latino origin with an overwhelming 8,714 choosing Spanish as their primary language at home. The influence of the Spanish language is obviously great and something to which the children in the Brockton area should be introduced. Children in Brockton should learn the Spanish language and of the culture in their schools, neighborhoods and communities.

When Brockton celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month each year, children benefit from entertaining and educational events and activities. These events range from Mariachi bands, dancing, storytelling and Latin American artifacts to Mexican food and historical and cultural events in local libraries and community centers.
